Meet Your Worm Farmer

Cushman Gillen

Cushman Gillen has been utilizing worms in the classroom for over 10 years and originally discovered the power of worm castings through his work developing school gardens in California. Working with the Worm Ladies of Charlestown (featured in The Worm Farmers Handbook) for approximately two years, he was able to hone in on the practice of transforming large amounts of pre-consumer food scraps into high quality vermicast.

With an M.ED and a B.S. from the University of New Hampshire, Cush is developing the Worm Lab Education to supply worms and worm bins to schools, provide professional development for teachers and staff, and offer curriculum and ongoing support to ensure the success of vermicomposting efforts in schools.

With a passion for regenerative agriculture and healing degraded soils, Cush is further developing strategies to enhance the biology and fungal content of vermicast while experimenting with various feed stocks that would otherwise find their way to the landfill or potentially pollute our delicate waterways. It is his ultimate purpose to aid in the transition to a more just and sustainable world while fostering climate resilience from the ground up.
